Prep report: Duluth Marshall golfer tied for fourth at state meet

Duluth Marshall senior Derek Farrell shot an opening-round 70 on Tuesday to tie for fourth at the Minnesota Class AA high school boys golf tournament at the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan.

Farrell is tied with Totino-Grace’s Matt Lutz, three strokes behind leader Reece Sanders of Blake.
Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin is seventh in the Class AA team competition.
The final 18 holes are scheduled for today.
-- Grand Rapids is sixth in the Class AAA boys meet at Bunker Hills Golf Club in Coon Rapids, Minn. Erik Sarkela’s 75 was the Thunderhawks’ top round and good for a 14th-place tie after the first round.
-- In Class A boys at Pebble Creek in Becker, Minn., North Woods’ Cole Martin shot a 79 to tie for 15th after the first round.
-- Among girls, Hibbing’s Vanessa Yeager shot an 82 to tie for 17th after the first day of Class AA competition; and North Woods’ Kristen Lilya is tied for 13th in Class A after shooting an 86. Barnum is last in the eight-team Class A team field.
