Duluth Marshall’s upstart girls soccer season came to a close in the Section 7A semifinals Tuesday, and in heart-breaking fashion, no less.
The second-seeded Hilltoppers, playing at home, forced a tie game when Anna Eyer scored in the 74th minute, but Mercedey Harper produced the game-winner in overtime to lift No. 6 North Branch to a 4-3 victory and a place in Thursday’s section final opposite Princeton.
Alli McKenna scored the contest’s first two goals to give Marshall (14-5) a lead. But Harper’s first goal tied it for the Vikings (11-7-1) in the 27th minute, and the visitors survived to spring an upset.
North Branch will meet Princeton, which rolled past Hermantown 5-0 in Tuesday’s other semifinal, for a shot at the state tournament.
