Prep Report: Duluth Central girls blank Hermantown

Sarah Fleissner had 11 saves in the shutout as the Trojans (8-1, 5-0) won their eighth consecutive game and increased their lead atop the conference. The Hawks (3-6-2, 1-3-1) lost their fourth in a row.

BOYS SOCCER

Duluth Central 2, Hermantown 1

The Trojans scored twice in the first 16 minutes and then hung on the final 15 minutes with only 10 players to win the LSC game at Public Schools Stadium.

Grand Rapids 2, Proctor 1

Christian Pearson scored both goals for the visiting Thunderhawks, including the game-winner in the 79th minute.

Chris Carlson tied the game in the 66th minute for the Rails (9-2), who lost for the second straight night.

Holmes siblings win invite

Superior's brother-sister combination Shane and Leah Holmes each won their events at the Northwestern Invitational.

Shane Holmes won in 5 minutes, 14 seconds, while his sister won the girls race in 5:56.

Ashland edged Superior for the boys team title; Northwestern won the girls title by 13 points over the Spartans.

The host Trojans swept the Hilltoppers in the final meeting between the LSC rivals.

Carlton 3, Cook County 1

Amanda Eggert posted 32 set assists as the Bulldogs (4-3, 3-0) won the Polar League match at Grand Marais, handing the Vikings their first loss of the season.

Cook County fell to 6-1 overall, 4-1 in the league.

Esko 3, Floodwood 0

Lydia Pelletier's seven ace blocks helped the visiting Eskomos (9-1, 3-0) top the Polar Bears in the Polar League match.

Report: Ashland's North resigns

According to the Ashland Daily Press, members of the Ashland School Board met in closed session following the regular September board meeting Monday and were told that varsity football coach Clay North has resigned.

North, who has been associated with the Ashland High School program since the early 1990s, resigned after he was placed on leave by district administrators while they looked into concerns raised by parents into his conduct as head coach.

-- The newspaper also reported boys basketball coach Joe Brennan has stepped down to spend more time with his family.
