Prep report: Denfeld routs Central in boys hockey

Cody Hotchkin had four assists, and Josh Wentz and Jason Johnson each had a pair of goals as Duluth Denfeld defeated Duluth Central 8-1 in a Lake Superior Conference high school boys hockey game Thursday night at Heritage Arena.

The Hunters (11-6 overall, 3-0 LSC) led 4-0 less than nine minutes into the first period .

Denfeld played the game without coach Kevin Smalley, who served a mandatory one-game suspension after receiving a game-disqualification penalty after the Hunters' 5-4 overtime loss to Hibbing on Tuesday.

Fifteen Hawks recorded at least one point and Tyler Ampe stopped all 13 shots in an LSC shutout over the visiting Oredockers (4-11, 0-5).

Dana Gallop scored two third-period goals to help the Lightning (13-4-1) tie the host Lumberjacks (11-8-1).

East's Tofte, Proctor's Rupert win titles

Duluth East senior Alena Tofte and Proctor sophomore Erik Rupert won individual titles in the Duluth East Invitational Nordic ski meet at Snowflake Nordic Center.

Tofte finished in a combined 29 minutes, 54.1seconds for a five-kilometer classical and five-kilometer freestyle girls race. Teammate Marian Lund was second in 31:06.9 and Kathryn Van Every of Ely was third in 32:04.5. Tofte was first in both events.

Rupert had a combined boys time of 26:20.3 and was followed by East's Gus Downs in 26:24.5 and Kellen Witschen of Mesabi East-Virginia in 26:53.1. Rupert was first in the freestyle event and Downs won the classical race.

East swept the team titles. The Greyhounds had 389 points in the girls standings and Grand Rapids was second with 371. The East boys had 358 points and Grand Rapids had 357.
