Prep report: Denfeld kicks way into 7A soccer semifinals

Keegan Chastey and Xavier Decker each scored two goals to lead Duluth Denfeld to a 5-1 victory over Chisago Lakes in a Section 7A high school boys soccer quarterfinal Saturday at Public Schools Stadium.

Decker opened the scoring on an assist from Chastey in the sixth minute. Chastey added a goal four minutes later and drilled home a penalty kick to make it 3-0 in the 20th minute.

The Hunters (11-6-1) advance to play top-seeded Hermantown in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at PSS. The Hawks beat the Hunters 6-1 last Monday in the regular-season finale.

Hermantown 2, CEC 0

Evan Bjorlin and Matthew Joki tallied 13 minutes apart in the second half and Zach Carson made seven saves to send the Hawks (14-3-1) into the next round of the 7A playoffs.

The game was played at PSS due to the condition of Hermantown’s field.

Duluth Marshall 2, Grand Rapids 1

Griff Pichetti assisted on the Hilltoppers’ first goal and then scored the game-winner in the 68th minute to send Marshall to the 7A semifinals.

Goalkeeper Charlie Eginton made four saves for the Hilltoppers (10-7), who travel to St. Francis on Tuesday. The Saints eliminated Princeton 2-0 on Saturday.

GIRLS SOCCER

CEC 5, Two Harbors 0

Katie Turner had two goals and two assists as the Lumberjacks eased to the 7A quarterfinal win at Egerdahl Field in Proctor.

Kiana Bender added a goal and an assist for second-seeded Cloquet-Carlton (16-2), which will play St. Francis in a semifinal at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at PSS. The Saints beat Hermantown 4-0 on goals by Annika Fingal, Alison Owens, Mattisyn Mansink and Emma Kopet.

The other semifinal will pit Duluth Marshall, a 6-0 winner over North Branch, against the winner of the Chisago Lakes-Esko game that was postponed until Monday.

GIRLS TENNIS

Elk River 5, Duluth East 2

The Elks split four singles matches and swept three doubles matches to defeat the Greyhounds in the Section 7AA championship at Daytona Country Club, earning a berth in the Class AA state tournament.

East’s Aili Hietala and Shay Callaway won at No. 1 and 2 singles, respectively, but the Greyhounds didn’t win a set in the other five matches as the Elks repeated as section champions.

Koby Chouinard threw for one touchdown and ran for three others to lead the Vikings to the home win Friday night.

Crosby-Ironton 26, MLWR 22

Dakota Mitchell only completed nine passes but four went for touchdowns, including a 7-yarder to Colten Turk for the game-winner in a back-and-forth game Friday night in Crosby.

Moose Lake-Willow River held the Rangers to minus-2 yards rushing thanks to several sacks but Mitchell connected twice with Gabe Kramer for touchdowns and on a 20-yarder to Kale Dugan in the fourth quarter for an 18-16 lead.
The Rebels regained the lead when Mason Olson found Landin Kurhajetz on a 25-yard scoring pass.
