Deer River likely locked up the No. 1 seed in its subsection for the upcoming Section 7A high school baseball playoffs by outlasting Ely 7-6 in eight innings Friday in Deer River.
Jeffrey Moore earned the pitching win in relief as the Warriors (18-2) won their fifth straight. Chad Benham's eighth-inning double highlighted the winning surge for Deer River, ranked sixth in Class A.
Gage Merhar had a pair of hits and Tyler Housey doubled and drove in two runs for the Timberwolves (13-7).
Two Harbors 12, Mesabi East 2
Tim Luoma was 3-for-4 and knocked in four runs to lift the Agates (12-4) to the five-inning home win.

Superior's White qualifies for state
Superior senior Daisy White finished second in the discus with a throw of 124 feet, 4 inches in Thursday's Division 1 sectional at D.C. Everest High School in Schofield, Wis., to qualify for the Wisconsin state meet.
Fellow Spartans senior Caroline Becker also qualified with a third-place finish in the high jump. Becker cleared 5 feet, just an inch out of first place.
• In Division 2 sectionals at Medford High School on Thursday, four Ashland runners qualified as did a Northwestern duo.

Ashland's Aneesa Tucker took first in the 800 meters, finishing in 2 minutes, 18.4 seconds, while teammate Amy Wallis legged out a victory at 3,200 meters in just under 12 minutes. Ashland brothers Walker Miller (1,600 winner, third in 3,200) and Maury Miller (third, 1,600) also qualified on the boys side.
Northwestern's Donny Pooler finished between the Millers in the 1,600 and will be joined at next week's state meet by pole vaulter Abigail Nelson.
