Senior quarterback Marc Peterson connected with Rick Johnson for a 24-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-9 with 2:25 to play, giving Esko a 33-28 victory at Duluth Marshall in a back-and-forth Great Polar White Division high school football game Friday afternoon.

Peterson also threw 55- and 54-yard TD passes to Aaron Olson and scored on a 1-yard sneak. Brant Hintsala's 76-yard scoring run gave the Eskomos (2-2, 2-1) a 21-6 lead before the Hilltoppers (3-1, 1-1) rallied to take a 28-27 lead in the final minutes on a 1-yard Jack Serre run.

Esko opens its new artificial-turf field stadium next Friday against Two Harbors.

Nick Mehlum ran for a 4-yard touchdown with less than a minute to play as the Spartans won the Big Rivers Conference game at Ole Haugsrud Field to remain undefeated and clinch a Division 1 playoff spot.

Superior (5-0, 3-0), which is off to its best start since the 1990 team won the state championship, drove from midfield in 10 plays to score the game-winner.

Mehlum was 17-for-27 passing for 227 yards and two touchdown passes to Jake Libal, who caught six passes for 122 yards.
