Wait, what was that? The 67th annual United Northern Sportsmen’s Club ice fishing contest? That means they’ve been doing this since Harry Truman was president!

The contest, which annually draws hundreds of participants, is set for Island Lake on Jan. 26 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. The big, family-friendly contest is held on the lake just off the grounds of the club’s retreat, about 20 miles north of Duluth on County Highway 4, a mile or so past the Island Lake bridge.

Tickets are just $5 and get you entered for a $2,000 door prize even if you don’t fish or don't catch a fish. There will also be prizes for the largest fish caught:

  • First place, $1,000;
  • Second place, $500;
  • Third place, $250;
  • Fourth place, $125;
  • Fifth place, $75 as well as a trophy;
  • Under 15 youth, $50.
