Hibbing earned a berth in the Class A high school boys tennis state tournament by winning two matches Saturday, including 6-1 over host Virginia in the Section 7A final.

The Bluejackets, who edged Eveleth-Gilbert 4-3 in the morning semifinals, advance to play in the Class A quarterfinals against a to-be-determined opponent June 4 at the Reed Sweatt Family Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Hibbing swept all four singles matches against the Blue Devils, who slipped past Cloquet-Esko 4-3 in the other semifinal, and took the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches.


Duluth East 10, Moorhead 1

The Greyhounds cruised to the win at the Bemidji tournament as Caden Edwards struck out nine and didn't allow a hit in his six innings on the mound.

East lost 5-3 to Bemidji in its other tournament game.


Proctor 6-6, Duluth East 2-2

The Rails swept a doubleheader at home Friday night as Liz Frase and Maddy Walsh each tossed complete-game six-hitters.

Erin Hawk had six hits, including a home run, and drove in six runs overall.

Hermantown 11, Esko 1

Alana Mayry scattered five hits in five innings and helped her cause with three hits (including a homer) and three RBIs in the nonconference meeting Friday in Esko.
