Curling: Shuster reaches national final
John Shuster and his Duluth Curling Club rink reached the men's final at the USA Curling National Championships on Friday in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Shuster, the 2018 Winter Olympics gold medalist, defeated Rich Ruohonen 8-3 in the Page 1-2 playoff at Wings Event Center and, along with teammates Chris Plys and John Landsteiner (both of Duluth) and Matt Hamilton (McFarland, Wis.), will play for the national title at 3 p.m. today against either Ruohonen or Todd Birr. Birr's team eliminated Mark Fenner's side, which included Korey Dropkin of Duluth, 5-4.
In women's action, Duluth's Cory Christensen barely missed out on a finals berth, losing 7-5 to Nina Roth in the semifinals Friday. Christensen ousted Stephanie Senneker 9-8 in an extra end earlier in the day.
