Curling: Shuster wins battle of unbeatens
Olympic gold medalist John Shuster pulled away from Rich Ruohonen to win 8-3 on Monday night in a battle of undefeated men's teams at the USA Curling National Championships at Kalamazoo, Mich.
Shuster and his Duluth Curling Club teammates were tied 3-3 before scoring the final five points and improve to 5-0 in round-robin play at Wings Event Center. Ruohonen, whose Chaska, Minn.-based rink has former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen as an alternate, dropped to 4-1 and in a tie for second.
Two other men's rinks with Duluth connections — Chase Sinnett (with Duluth's Jon Harstad) and Mark Fenner (with Duluth's Korey Dropkin) — both ended the day at 2-3 and tied for fourth.
In women's action, Duluth's Cory Christensen lost 8-7 to Jamie Sinclair in a match for first place in the round-robin standings. Christensen is now 2-1, trailing Sinclair by a game with four matches left to play.
