DULUTH — Cadyn Schwabe had a double, three walks, three runs and two RBIs to lead the Eau Claire Express to an 8-1 victory over the Duluth Huskies Tuesday night in Northwoods League baseball before 857 fans at Wade Stadium.

The game was a bit of a playoff primer as the same teams will meet in the best-of-three opening playoff round at 5:35 p.m. Sunday at Wade Stadium. Games two and three, if necessary, will be in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

J.J. Pease (4-1) allowed just one run on three hits in five innings to get the win as the Express, the Great Plains East second-half champions, won their fourth straight. Clay Conn added two triples and two runs for Eau Claire (21-9 in second half). The Express manufactured their eight runs on just six hits as they took advantage of 11 walks, four hit batters and two wild pitches issued by the Huskies.

Jared Mettam had two of the four hits for Duluth (13-17), the Great Plains East first-half champions. St. Scholastica’s Jake Schelonka pitched a perfect ninth for the Huskies, notching a strikeout.

Duluth has four games remaining in the regular season. The Huskies play a pair of games against La Crosse in their regular-season home finales, starting at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Wade Stadium. Duluth then closes the regular season with two games at the Willmar Stingers before taking on the Express in the playoffs.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
