The Duluth Huskies took advantage of miscues by the La Crosse Loggers to win 7-4 in Northwoods League baseball action Wednesday night before 3,214 at Copeland Park in La Crosse, Wis.
Duluth scored all the runs it needed in a five-run third inning as the Huskies only had two hits but used a walk, a balk and wild pitch to get runners home. Sam Baier had a hit and two RBIs to lead Duluth (2-0), while Ryan Mantle and Mike Ferri each had a hit, run and RBI to lead La Crosse (0-2).
The teams scored 11 runs on just 11 hits because pitching was erratic, with the teams combining on 25 strikeouts, including 14 by the Loggers, but also having 17 walks, including 10 by the Huskies.
Duluth's bullpen was sharp, with three pitchers allowing no runs in 5 1/3 innings. North Dakota State product Kevin Folman of Hermantown recorded three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to earn the save.
