Northwoods League: Huskies split doubleheader at Eau Claire
Duluth shuts out the Express in Game 1 by giving up just five hits. The Huskies then walk 14 batters and give up just three hits in Game 2.
The Duluth Huskies split a Northwoods League doubleheader Wednesday at Eau Claire, winning the opener 4-0 and dropping the nightcap 7-4.
Jonny Guzman and Michael Sarhatt combined for the shutout with Guzman being credited with the win. Guzman gave up five hits over seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Sarhatt gave up no hits over the final two innings with two walks and three stikeouts.
Mike Boeve drove in two runs for the Huskies in the opener while Ambren Voitik went 2-for-4 at the plate.
In defeat later Wednesday evening, Huskies pitching combined to give up just three hits, but the four arms combined to walk 14 batters. Starter Nate Wohlgemuth walked five batters in one-plus inning of work while giving up no hits, but three runs for the loss.
All four runs in the nightcap came in the eighth and ninth inning for Duluth. Boeve hit a two-run homer in the eighth and Bryan Broecker drove in two runs with a triple in the ninth before being thrown out trying to steal home.
The Huskies return to Wade Stadium in Duluth on Thursday to host the Waterloo Bucks at 6:35 p.m.
