Northland Outdoors Forecast: Showers and thunderstorms possible this weekend

Hot temperatures to start the weekend

We are part of The Trust Project.

For those of you heading to the lakes early this weekend, expect some hot temperatures across the region. Highs in the 90s will be common place along the Red River and back into Minnesota, with highs approaching the lower-100s possible in parts of South Dakota. These hot temperatures will be ahead of a cold front which will be making it's way through the Dakotas during the afternoon. This will likely result in the development of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms along a line from western Ontario through southeastern North Dakota and back into eastern South Dakota during the afternoon. These storms will then track southeastwards, but will likely begin to weaken during the overnight hours as they move further into eastern Minnesota.

The cold front will slowly move eastwards on Saturday across Minnesota, and possibly briefly stalling out. This will allow for another wave of low pressure to ride along the frontal boundary. Scattered rain showers, and even some thunderstorms, will be possible across the entire Northland area on Saturday. In addition, clouds will be present and this will work to keep temperatures down. This will not be a continuous rain event for the region but it may be enough to impact some of your outdoor plans.

An area of high pressure will begin to build across the Canadian Prairies on Sunday, and this will likely force the cold front further to the southeast. However, another wave of low pressure may ride along the portion of the frontal boundary positioned over southern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and this may bring another round of rain showers and thunderstorms to the area. In the meantime, temperatures across the majority of the area will be noticeably lower with highs in the 70s being likely, and some places seeing highs in the 60s.

In all, three rounds of precipitation will possibly impact the Northland over the weekend. The first being the scattered rain showers and thunderstorms mainly concentrated in the central portion of our region. The second round will feature generally scattered rain showers, and maybe some thunderstorms, for most of the area. The third round will likely have it's main focus on Minnesota and Wisconsin. Because the third round may feature more of a near-steady to steady rain event, rainfall totals over the weekend will likely be highest in those areas, whilst rainfall totals in the western half of the region (where the precipitation will generally be scattered) will generally see the lower rainfall totals of the region.
