Geology of the Sax-Zim Bog: 6:30-8 p.m. Dec. 17, via Zoom. Without a few major geologic events, Meadowlands' Sax-Zim Bog would not exist. This program will investigate and introduce the basics of Minnesota’s diverse geology in the context of the bog, from bedrock formation to peatlands. Nordic Spirit Youth Ski League: Jan. 10-Feb. 14, Spirit Mountain upper trails, Duluth. Nordic (cross-country) ski lessons for grades 4-8, 1-2:30 p.m., and K-3, 1:30-2:30 p.m. Equipment and lessons provided. Masks required. Spirit Mountain is "working to provide a safe COVID-19 experience." Fee: $20 for first child, $15 for second, $45 per family. Sax-Zim Bog Diversity: 6:30-8 p.m. Dec. 31, via Zoom. This program will consider the full biodiversity found in Meadowlands' Sax-Zim Bog — over 2,300 species — with special attention to those that are of highest interest to visitors — butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies and wildflowers — though all species will get attention in this talk. Adventure Club: 2:15-5:30 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays or Thursdays. The nonprofit Positive Energy Outdoors offers outdoor field trips for K-5 kids. Activities include free play, snow shelters, animal tracking, snowshoeing, sledding, horse drawn wagon/sleigh rides, dogsledding, ice fishing, nordic skiing and park explorations. Van transport from Duluth or drop-off/pickup option to PEO base on Fredenberg Lake. Cost: $100 registration, $30 per session (twice-weekly minimum). Possible scholarship option.
