A proposal to split Douglas County from one deer management unit into three units has gained preliminary backing from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and is now open for public comment.

Results of the public survey will be among the topics of a Jan. 21 virtual meeting of the Douglas County Deer Advisory Committee set for 6:30 p.m. to be held on Zoom and phone. While the DNR has allowed the idea to advance, the final decision on whether to move forward with the split is expected to be made by the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board at their Feb. 24 meeting.
Supporters of the plan, including Superior's Al Horvath, who heads the Douglas County Deer Advisory Committee, says the split would allow deer management by ecosystem, by habitat type, noting the large county has widely different habitats that call for varied management rules, such as how many antlerless deer hunting permits are issued annually.
