DULUTH — Three local teams were among the top 10 finishers in the AIM (Anglers Insight Marketing) Weekend Walleye Series Minnesota State Championship held Friday and Saturday on Lake Superior and the St. Louis River.
The tournament was won by the Fargo-based team of Tom Huynh and Nate Wolske, who registered fish weighing an estimated 57.24 pounds of walleye over two days, with a five-fish limit each day. They took home a prize of $9,500. Tyler Wooden and Nate Leininger finished in second place, 15 pounds behind the champions, with 42.87 pounds.
The Twin Ports-area team of Keith Elza and Bob Gould took third place with 34.73 pounds while locals Colin O’Toole and Garrett Mullvian placed eighth with 21.06 pounds and Chad Clough and Chris Edqusit finished 10th with 20.10 pounds.
The tournament used a catch-record-release format where time-stamped photos of the fish are taken while the fish is on a measuring board. Each fish length is then converted to an estimated weight based on a standard chart.
A total of 58 boats registered fish. Earlier Minnesota division events this year in the Weekend Walleye Series were held on the Mississippi River, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs Lake and Lake Vermilion.
