Pittsburgh Penguins forward Phil Kessel is expected to be ready for training camp despite having surgery on his hand Friday.
“It was something he dealt with all season,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It bothered him. He took care of it. He’s not (expected) to miss any time.”
Kessel didn’t miss a beat despite aggravating the injury against the New York Rangers in the first-round of the playoffs. The 28-year-old former Minnesota Golden Gopher collected 10 goals and 12 assists in the postseason to help the Penguins skate away with their fourth Stanley Cup championship.
Kessel scored 26 goals and set up 33 others while playing in all 82 regular-season games in his first season with Pittsburgh, which acquired him in a blockbuster deal with Toronto on July 1, 2015.
Selected fifth overall by Boston in the 2006 draft, Kessel has recorded 273 goals and 306 assists in 750 career contests with the Bruins, Maple Leafs and Penguins.
