FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The Seattle Seahawks, getting a small measure of revenge for losing Super Bowl XLIX to New England in the final seconds, staged a valiant goal-line stand in the closing seconds and stunned the Patriots 31-24 Sunday night.
New England (7-2) had a first-and-goal at the 1 and failed on four tries - Tom Brady sneaking for no gain, LeGarrette Blount failing to gain, Brady actually losing a yard on a third-down sneak and fumble. Then - after Seattle had 12 men on the field, moving the ball back to the 1, Brady lobbed a pass in the direction of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who stumbled over safety Kam Chancellor as the ball fell incomplete.
The stand came at the end of what would have been a 75-yard scoring drive in the final 4:24.
The Seahawks (6-2-1) earned their second win in a row.
Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson finished 25 of 37 for 348 yards, and he tossed three touchdown passes to Doug Baldwin. Steven Hauschka kicked four field goals, and C.J. Prosise gained a combined 153 yards on the ground and through the air.
Brady, who threw the team’s first interception of the season, was 23 of 32 for 316 yards. It was the 75th 300-yard passing game of Brady’s career.
Blount ran for three touchdowns.
Dolphins 31, Chargers 24
SAN DIEGO - Kiko Alonso returned Philip Rivers’ third of four fourth-quarter interceptions for a touchdown, lifting Miami over San Diego.
Rivers was 23 of 44 for 326 yards as the Chargers failed to reach .500 of the first time since Week 2. Chargers running back Melvin Gordon, who rushed for 196 yards last week, was restricted to 70 yards on 24 carries.
The Dolphins’ Ryan Tannehill completed 17 of 24 passes for two touchdowns and 240 yards. Jay Ajayi rushed for 79 yards, breaking his three-game streak of 100-yard rushing outings.
Cardinals 23, 49ers 20
GLENDALE, Ariz. - Arizona overcame four turnovers and a late-game rally by San Francisco by getting a game-winning, 34-yard field goal from Chandler Catanzaro at the end of regulation for a victory.
It was the third field goal of the game for Catanzaro, who also connected from 39 and 19 yards.
Carson Palmer finished the game with 376 yards on 30 of 49 passing with one touchdown and two interceptions. More than 230 of those yards went to Larry Fitzgerald (12 catches for 133 yards) and Michael Floyd (5 for 103).
Colin Kaepernick completed 17 of 30 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown and he also ran 10 times for 55 more yards and a score.
Broncos 25, Saints 23
NEW ORLEANS - Justin Simmons leaped over the center to block a potential game-winning extra-point attempt and Will Parks returned it 84 yards for a two-point defensive conversion to lift Denver over New Orleans.
The Saints appeared poised to win after Drew Brees threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks with 1:22 left, tying the score at 23, pending the extra point try.
But on the extra-point attempt by Wil Lutz, Simmons hurdled the center and easily blocked the kick. The ball bounced into Parks’ hands at the Denver 16, and he ran down the left sideline for the two-point defensive score, putting Denver up 25-23.
Lutz came close to stepping out of bounds on the play, but after a replay review, the official determined that he did not, resulting in an 84-yard two-point return for the Broncos.
Chiefs 20, Panthers 17
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Cairo Santos kicked a 37-yard field goal on the last play of the game as Kansas City completed a comeback from 17 points down to defeat Carolina.
It was an unlikely conclusion as the Chiefs converted off two late turnovers to win their fifth game in a row. Santos kicked four field goals and Kansas City won despite going without a touchdown from its offense.
The Panthers were denied stretching their winning streak to three games. Cam Newton was 23 of 38 for 261 yards with a touchdown and interception.
Eagles 24, Falcons 15
PHILADELPHIA - Ryan Mathews ran for 109 yards and two touchdowns as Philadelphia rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Atlanta.
The Eagles trailed 15-13 when Mathews scored on a 5-yard run for the winning points and then their defense kept the high-flying Falcons’ offense in check, forcing a punt and then taking over on downs on Atlanta’s next two possessions. The Eagles wrapped it up when Caleb Sturgis drilled a 48-yard field goal with 1:57 left to make it a two-score game.
Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz completed 25 of 36 passes for 231 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Matt Ryan completed 18 of 33 for 267 yards, with a touchdown and an interception for the Falcons.
Texans 24, Jaguars 21
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Houston scored one touchdown on defense and set up another with a big play on special teams to give its offense an easy day against Jacksonville.
The Texans came into the game winless in three tries on the road but got the quick start they talked about all week when cornerback Kareem Jackson intercepted Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles on the first drive of the game and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.
That was the start of an opportunistic day for the Texans and another frustrating outing for the Jaguars, who have lost four straight and now hit the road for two games.
Rams 9, Jets 6
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Greg Zuerlein kicked three field goals, including the game-winning 34-yarder with 6:52 remaining in the fourth quarter, as Los Angeles edged New York.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Rams, who rode three Zuerlein field goals to a win for the second time this season. It was the second straight loss for the Jets, who are all but eliminated from playoff contention.
Rams wide receiver Kenny Britt had seven catches for 109 yards while running back Todd Gurley finished with 64 yards on 21 carries. Quarterback Case Keenum was 17-of-30 passing for 165 yards.
Jets quarterback Bryce Petty, who surprisingly made his first NFL career start in place of the injured Ryan Fitzpatrick, went 19 of 32 for 163 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Buccaneers 36, Bears 10
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Bay defense forced four turnovers in the first half, including a pick-six from Chris Conte, and beat Chicago for its first home win of the season.
Jameis Winston passed for 312 yards and two touchdowns for the Buccaneers and Jay Cutler had two interceptions and a fumble in the first half as the Bears dropped to 0-5 on the road.
Winston connected with tight end Cameron Brate for six catches and 70 yards in the first half alone, including his fifth touchdown.
