Minnesota’s newest state park, on the shore of Lake Vermilion, is set to open its new campground this summer.
Lake Vermilion-Soudan Underground Mine State Park became Minnesota’s newest state park after the state purchased nearly 3,000 acres of land - including five miles of Lake Vermilion shoreline - from U.S. Steel in 2010.
That property has been co-managed with the adjacent Soudan Underground Mine, and has undergone numerous improvements.
The new campground, with 33 individual campsites, is slated to open in mid-July, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reported Thursday. Among the amenities that will be available are electricity, flush toilets, showers, sanitation buildings and water access. There also will be Wi-Fi available at the park.
There will be two group camps that will allow both RV and tent camping. Another group camp will be semi-primitive.
Erika Rivers, Minnesota State Parks and Trails director, said Thursday that the group camps are designed to encourage multi-generational users. The new campground also will feature innovative design and energy applications, with a solar-powered sanitation building.
The only work left to be done is the installation of signage. After that, “we are letting the site rest,” Rivers said, further explaining that the “rest” is to allow grass and other flora to mature and grow.
As soon as an opening date is set, the campsites will be added to the online reservation system.
The park is currently open for day visitors, and there are three boat-in sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Those sites are equipped with a fire ring, toilets and bear box, but do not have potable water.
