Two Harbors angler Joe Shead caught, photographed and released the latest in what has been a string of big lake trout taken on western Lake Superior lately.
While fishing has slowed numbers-wise from a red-hot May and June, anglers going deep are still catching some very big lakers.
Shead caught and released the trout Monday morning that was 44 inches long with a 26-inch girth. One fish-weight calculator put it at about 37 pounds, he noted. Shead said he caught his monster laker off Two Harbors using a spoon on a downrigger.
“It was a struggle to hold, if you couldn’t tell by the photo!’’ Shead said. “She released well to thrill another angler.”
In June, Ronald Farley, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, caught and released a lake trout 36 inches long with a 34-inch girth on Kingfisher Charters on Lake Superior near Silver Bay.

Shead’s is the biggest western Lake Superior lake trout we’ve heard of since last August when charter captain Jordan Korzenowski and his client, Steven Gotchie from Spring Lake in Itasca County, battled a 45 ¼-inch laker with a 30 ⅛ inch girth. Gotchie’s trout was also released.
