A season-opening split with one of the favored teams in Hockey East left Minnesota Duluth coach Shannon Miller optimistic about 2011-12.

The No. 6-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 5 Boston College 7-2 and lost 3-2 last weekend at Amsoil Arena. UMD is at Connecticut, another Hockey East member, today and Saturday in nonconference play.

"We were incredibly focused and intense, and impressive offensively in our opening game," Miller said this week. "We played as hard as we could the next night but just were not mentally sharp. (Goalie) Jenny Harss was phenomenal in both games. This week we're continuing to teach basic habits before facing (top-ranked) Wisconsin (Oct. 21-22)."

Connecticut (0-2-2) was on the road last weekend, losing at St. Lawrence 4-1 and tying at Clarkson 3-3.
