Lunkers end Huskies' win streak

It may have been the Fourth of July, but the Duluth Huskies found few fireworks on offense Sunday as they fell to the visiting Brainerd Lunkers 2-1 at Wade Stadium, snapping their three-game Northwoods League winning streak.

It may have been the Fourth of July, but the Duluth Huskies found few fireworks on offense Sunday as they fell to the visiting Brainerd Lunkers 2-1 at Wade Stadium, snapping their three-game Northwoods League winning streak.

Brainerd starter Nick Anderson won the pitchers' duel, allowing just three hits and no runs over seven innings of work, with five strikeouts.

The Lunkers (13-18) scored twice in the third inning. Levi Ferguson reached base after being hit by a pitch, and later scored on a double by Vince Bruno. Bruno scored on a single by Tommy Reyes, providing all the offense Brainerd would need.

Duluth (14-12) made it interesting in the eighth. With Anderson out of the game, Huskies center fielder Zeke DeVoss doubled off reliever Ian Horkley, then scored on a single by Cody Asche to cut the Lunkers' lead to one.

But Duluth failed to score another run in the inning, and went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Duluth starter Chris Jensen allowed two runs on five hits in five innings of work, while striking out five.

The Huskies are now two games behind North Division-leading Rochester in the first-half standings.

Duluth now heads to Thunder Bay for a doubleheader tonight, and another game on Tuesday. Then they head to Rochester for a pair of games Wednesday and Thursday.
