Junior hockey: Rexine’s late goal helps Wilderness shoot down Jets

Minnesota starts out fast then holds off Janesville.

Nichola Rexine’s goal at 17:49 in the third period on assists from Bobby Metz and Matthew McQuade lifted the Minnesota Wilderness to a 6-5 victory over the Janesville Jets Friday, Oct. 10, 2021, in North American Hockey League action before 825 at Northwoods Arena in Cloquet.

McQuade was one of six players who scored for the Wilderness, while Gunnar Thoreson added two assists. The Wilderness led 3-1 and 5-2 before the Jets stormed back with a couple goals in the final 10 minutes of the second period and Brendan Doyle’s equalizer at 7:46 in the third, setting the stage for Rexine’s heroics.

Goalie Jacob Zacharewicz had 23 saves for Minnesota while Owen Millward and Michael D’Orazio combined on 20 saves for Janesville.

The same teams rematch at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at Northwoods Arena.
