Joey Webb and Evan Geist picked up victories as the Duluth Huskies got strong pitching and just enough offense to sweep Thunder Bay 1-0 and 3-1 in a seven-inning Northwoods League baseball doubleheader on Tuesday before 1,157 at Port Arthur Stadium in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Webb (2-3) pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts to lead Duluth in the opener, while Conor Szczerba knocked in Connor Joe with a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning for the only run of the game.
Geist (4-4) went four and a third innings in the second game, striking out four and not yielding an earned run as the Huskies (9-5 second half, 28-20 overall) took over sole possession of first place in the North Division second-half standings. James Ramsay had a hit and RBI to lead Duluth.
Matt Cooper and Dan Ludwig took the losses for Thunder Bay (5-8, 21-27) despite pitching well.
The same teams rematch at 7:05 p.m. today, only this time it'll be at Wade Stadium as the Huskies begin a five-game homestand before next week's Northwoods League All-Star Game in Madison, Wis.
