Early offense and steady pitching led the Duluth Huskies to a 6-3 win over the La Crosse Loggers in a Northwoods League baseball game Tuesday night in front of 1,251 at Wade Stadium.
The Huskies (2-5 second half) opened with three consecutive hits and Liam Sabino hit a two-out triple, sparking a four-run first inning. That was all the offense they needed, as Huskies starter Ryan Tapani was strong despite allowing three runs in the fifth inning. Tapani struck out four in earning his third win of the season.
After Tapani allowed his sixth hit of the night in the sixth inning, relievers Wade Regas and Quentin Longrie combined to no-hit the Loggers (2-4) over the final three frames. Longrie earned the save after throwing two perfect innings and striking out three.
Carter Hanford added two insurance runs with a double in the fifth inning, scoring Daniel Amaral and Brendan McClary. Hanford was one of four Huskies with two hits. The Huskies outhit the Loggers 12-6.
The teams meet again at 6:35 p.m. today at Wade Stadium.
