Four Duluth Huskies were named to the 2016 Northwoods League North Division All-Star team, which will take on the South Division at 7:05 p.m. July 19 at Simmons Field in Kenosha, Wis.
Third baseman Carter Hanford, outfielder Daniel Amaral and right-handed pitchers Wade Regas and Ryan Tapani will represent the Huskies. They’ll be managed by Dale Varsho and his staff, which led the Eau Claire Express to a first-half North Division title.
Hanford, a sophomore at Jefferson College, is batting .299 with 11 RBIs. He’s played in 30 of 38 games prior to Friday. Amaral, a freshman at UCLA, has played in 24 games and posted a .337 batting average with 11 RBIs.
Regas, a junior at Texas Wesleyan, has appeared in 18 games as a reliever. He has one win, three saves and a 1.90 ERA. Tapani, a sophomore at Creighton, is 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA in his six starts and seven appearances.
-- The Huskies lost their fifth straight game and fell to 0-3 in the second half of the season after a 15-3 loss to the Express at Wade Stadium on Friday night.
Eau Claire scored five runs in the sixth and seven more in the seven while finishing with 22 hits. Express shortstop Cody Bohanek finished 3-for-5 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored. Corey Gaconi was the losing pitcher after giving up four runs - three earned - off eight hits. His relievers surrendered the other 11 runs - all earned - with Jesse Fruge left on for the final three innings to give up eight runs on 10 hits.
Duluth hosts Eau Claire again at 6:35 p.m. today at Wade Stadium. Another loss would tie the Huskies’ season-long losing streak of six games between June 4-9.
