The unbeaten Waterloo Bucks took advantage of four Duluth Huskies errors in a 7-4 Northwoods League victory Saturday night before 909 at Wade Stadium.
University of Minnesota sophomore Matthew Stemper had three hits to lead Waterloo (5-0), while Winston-Salem’s Mikel Hill added two doubles, a run and an RBI. Waterloo starter Preston Church threw five shutout innings to get the Bucks off to a good start before the Huskies (2-2) rallied.
The teams combined to strand 25 baserunners, including 14 by Waterloo.
Trailing 3-0, Duluth came back with two in the sixth and another in the seventh to tie the score. It was all for naught, however, as Waterloo scored three unearned runs in the top of the eighth on two Duluth errors.
Matt McLaughlin had three hits to lead the Huskies, while Alex Wojciechowski of Minnesota Duluth and Colton Waltner added two hits apiece. The teams meet again at 5:05 p.m. today at Wade Stadium.
