The cities of Proctor and Hermantown proclaimed Thursday Proctor-Hermantown Mirage State Champions Day in both cities.
The Mirage won their first Minnesota State High School League Class A championship on Saturday after defeating Gentry Academy 3-2 in double-overtime with a one-timer by Alyssa Watkins.
Watkins’ one-timer went high into the near side of the net, over the right shoulder of Gentry Academy goalie Rylee Bartizal, who had 21 saves for the Stars (20-2).
The Mirage captured not only their first state title, but the Northland’s second girls state hockey title and first since Hibbing-Chisholm in 1997.
The Mirage also ended their season undefeated with a record of 21-0.
“We are so proud of these student-athletes and their coaches,” said Hermantown Mayor Wayne Boucher. “The courage, drive and determination they exemplified this season is something we respect and value across our entire community.”
