Wisconsin-Superior's Amanda Sergent scored with about five minutes remaining to pull the Yellowjackets within a goal of Wisconsin-River Falls but that's as close as the game would get, with the Falcons claiming a 4-3 victory on Thursday at W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wis.

UWS fell to 2-4 in the WIAC and 9-5-1 overall while River falls improved to 5-1 in the league and 14-3-1 overall. The teams take Friday off before playing the second game of the home-and-home series at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wessman Arena in Superior.

On Thursday, behind 2-0 in the second period, UWS' Jenna Curtis scored on assists from Kaleigh Martinson and Sergent. After River Falls retook a two-goal edge, the Yellowjackets' C.C. Hayes scored a power play goal on an assist from Sergent to again cut the lead to one.

But River Falls' Maddie McCollins scored at 12:42 of the third to up the lead to two and, after Sergent's goal at 14:16, the 'Jackets couldn't get the tying goal past Falcons' goalie Sami Miller, who made 25 saves. UWS goalie Catherine Johnson made 31 stops.
