Women's hockey: Rooney, US blank Japan at worlds
United States goaltender Maddie Rooney, a Minnesota Duluth junior, posted 10 saves and Bulldogs teammate Sydney Brodt contributed an assist as Team USA beat Japan 4-0 on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the Women's World Championships in Espoo, Finland.
The Americans advance to play Russia in a semifinal at noon Saturday.
Hilary Knight and Dani Cameranesi gave the U.S. a 2-0 advantage before Rooney made a great save on a 2-on-1 breakaway in the second period.
Cayla Barnes and Kendall Coyne Schofield tacked on third-period goals to complete the scoring.
