ST. PAUL - If high school hockey fans around Minnesota didn’t know who Ben Troumbly was before this week, they do now.

The Greenway junior rescued the Raiders this afternoon at Xcel Energy Center, scoring on the power play late in the third period to force overtime, then netting the game-winner 23 seconds into the extra session as Greenway rallied past top-seeded Mahtomedi 3-2 in a Class A state tournament semifinal.

The Raiders’ 11th consecutive win sends them into Saturday’s championship opposite St. Cloud Cathedral.

No. 4 Greenway (17-13) looked down and out after watching the Zephyrs (22-7-1) score twice in the third period to seize control. But a late power play gave the Raiders life, and Troumbly’s blast evened it.

His game-winner was the St. Cloud State commit’s third goal of the state tournament and 24th of the season.

Donte Lawson had given Greenway a 1-0 lead in the second, converting a nifty drop pass from Troumbly as the two linemates continued their rink-ratting display on the home ice of the Minnesota Wild.

The Raiders and second-seeded Crusaders meet at about noon Saturday.
