Maura Crowell's Team USA opened the Under-18 Women's World Championship by skating past Russia 3-2 on Sunday in Japan.
Sydney Shearen scored what proved to be the game-winner for the Americans in the second period, and teammate Skylar Vetter stopped 19 of 21 shots between the pipes.
"We're really happy to get our first win of the tournament tonight against a quality opponent like Russia," Crowell, the Minnesota Duluth coach, said in a news release from USA Hockey. "It's really important to get a win in the opening game and I think tonight is a good boost to the confidence in our locker room as we move ahead in the tournament."
The U.S. continued preliminary-round play against Canada early this morning. That contest started at 2 a.m. local time.
