College men’s hockey: Bulldogs to play Desert Hockey Classic at Coyotes’ Gila River Arena in December

Arizona State has finalized details for its 2018 Desert Hockey Classic holiday tournament, which features Minnesota Duluth.

This year’s edition scheduled for Dec. 28-29 is back at Gila River Arena in Glendale, the home of the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

The Bulldogs will open the tournament against in-state rival Minnesota State-Mankato at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 28 with the Sun Devils and Clarkson squaring off in the late game. Losers play at 3:30 p.m. on Dec. 29, followed by the winners at 6:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs captured a holiday tournament a trophy a year ago en route to winning the 2018 NCAA championship, winning Dartmouth’s Ledyard Classic despite missing five players to the 2018 World Junior Championship.

UMD will be shorthanded again over the holidays due to the World Juniors, with four Bulldogs on the radar for the 2019 U.S. National Junior Team. UMD coach Scott Sandelin will also an assistant for Team USA, working under Mavericks coach Mike Hastings.
