College men's hockey: UMD's Perunovich unanimous pick for NCHC All-Rookie team

Minnesota Duluth freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich was a unanimous pick for the six-member NCHC All-Rookie Team announced Tuesday.

Perunovich, who is eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft, led all freshmen and all defensemen in scoring in NCHC play this season, averaging a point per game with eight goals and 16 assists in 24 league games. His eight goals in NCHC play leads all defensemen while his 16 assists in NCHC play leads all freshmen.

Overall, Perunovich has nine goals and 22 assists for 31 points in 34 games to lead the Bulldogs in scoring and assists. The last defenseman to lead the Bulldogs in scoring was Dale Jago with 36 points in 40 games as a junior in 1988-89.

Heading into this weekend's first-round NCHC playoff series against Western Michigan at Amsoil Arena, Perunovich is two points shy of Justin Faulk's UMD record for most points in a single season by a freshman defenseman. Faulk had 33 points in 2010-11.
