Bulldogs open 2015 with OT exhibition win in Canada

THUNDER BAY, Ontario, Canada — Minnesota Duluth junior defenseman Andy Welinski of Duluth put away a rebound produced via a breakaway shot by freshman forward Karson Kuhlman of Esko with 0.6 seconds left on the clock to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 overtime exhibition win over Lakehead University on Friday at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay.

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 after two periods and 2-1 in the third, but a goal by Kuhlman 4:19 into the third tied the game at 1-1 and a score by junior forward Austin Farley midway through the third sent the game into overtime.

The Bulldogs put 51 shots on the Thunderwolves goal, but Lakehead goaltender Jake Bocsh stopped 48 of those shots.

Friday’s game was the Bulldogs’ first in Canada in 50 years. They play Lakehead again Saturday in Thunder Bay at 6:30 p.m. CST.
