Gernander named to AHL Hall of Fame

Coleraine native Ken Gernander was among four named to the American Hockey League Hall of Fame on Thursday. An induction ceremony is Jan. 28 at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, R.I., as part of the 2013 AHL All-Star Classic.

Gernander, 43, a forward for 14 years in the AHL through 2005, mostly with Hartford (Conn.) and Binghamton (N.Y.), finished with 624 points, the most by an American-born player in league history. His 973 regular-season games played rank ninth all-time. He had a streak of 211 consecutive games played and won two league sportsmanship awards.

As a coach with Hartford, he spent two seasons as an assistant and in five years as a head coach is 208-158-30. Gernander also played 12 games in the NHL, with the New York Rangers, recording two goals and five assists.

Also honored by the AHL Hall of Fame Selection Committee, for the eighth induction class, are Harvey Bennett, Jim Morrison and Peter White.
