Griak honored
Duluth native Roy Griak of St. Louis Park, Minn., was presented with a memento of his high school days Sept. 24 in Minneapolis during the Roy Griak Invitational cross country meet. Griak, 87, set the 880-yard track record at Morgan Park High School in 2 minutes, 1.1 seconds as a senior in 1942. A plaque with the school's track and field records has remained on a wall through the closing of Morgan Park High School and in the building's years as Morgan Park Middle School. Minnesota Duluth cross country and track coach Paul Nisius (right), a Duluth Central graduate, presented Griak with the plaque. Griak was the University of Minnesota's head coach in men's cross country and track and field for 33 years, from 1963 to 1996. He continues as an administrative assistant for track and cross country.
