Get Outdoors: Volunteer to help build the Superior Hiking Trail

Superior Hiking Trail Association "Fourth Fridays," 9 a.m.-5 p.m. June 26, Two Harbors; July 24, Grand Marais; Aug. 28, Duluth; Sept. 25, Schroeder; and Oct. 23, Silver Bay-Finland. This series of volunteer opportunities during the trail-building season are a way for first-time volunteers to get involved, learn basic skills and give back to the Superior Hiking Trail. Tasks may include lopping a brushy section of trail, moving materials to a project site or basic trail restoration. Contact Jo Swanson at for more information.

  • "Conservation Club: 4-H Water Watchers," Wednesdays, July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and Aug. 5, 10-11 a.m. Youth can participate in a weekly online citizen science program focused on invasive species, natural resources and general conservation content.   • "4-H Summer Naturalist Program," Tuesdays, 6 p.m., and Thursdays, 3 p.m.; sessions start June 22. Join 4-H families throughout Northeast Minnesota to become summer naturalists. "Full Day of Surf, SUP and Foil Surfing Instruction at Island Lake," 9 a.m.-5 p.m. July 11, 17, 23 or 24, University of Minnesota Duluth. Prone surfboard training followed by stand-up paddleboard surfing and foil surfing instruction using a ski boat wake. Four available dates; four people maximum per group.
