Undefeated Forest Lake ninth-grader Dusty Boyer became the first large-school singles champion from Section 7 in 58 years Friday with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Eden Prairie senior Justin Haag in the Class AA title match at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
No. 2-ranked Boyer (32-0) didn't lose a set in winning four Class AA matches. Top-ranked Hamish Weerasinghe, an Edina junior, lost to Haag in the semifinals and finished third. The last large-school singles champion from Section 7 was Vincent Bugliosi of Hibbing in 1951. Duluth Marshall's Pete Torgrimson won the 2002 Class A singles title.
Duluth East seniors Jake Tideman and Jake Decatur finished fourth in Class AA doubles, losing to Eagan's Derek Taylor and Justin Abrams in the third-place match.
* In Class A, top-ranked Rochester Lourdes junior Ben Kopecky won a second straight singles title, while Blake senior Tips Jackley teamed with a third partner (Ford Traff) to win a third straight doubles championship. Virginia junior Jordan Krebsbach and sophomore Cody Mauston finished third in doubles, and Eveleth-Gilbert senior David Mihm lost in the consolation singles final.
