Carter Fonger scored the go-ahead touchdown and then forced and recovered a fumble at the goal line on defense to help the Superior football team seal a 13-12 victory over La Crosse Logan Saturday afternoon at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

For most of the first three quarters of "Senior Day," the game was a defensive slugfest and the Spartans clung to a 6-0 lead they established in the first quarter via a 2-yard touchdown plunge from Kaden Kimmes.

But the Rangers used a long-range passing attack to catch and overtake the Spartans in the second half. First, La Crosse Logan quarterback Josh Waite connected with Ryan Bye on a 60-yard TD pass with 1:07 left in the third quarter. Then Waite used that passing game again to set up another score — a 2-yard run from Trent Wieland — that gave the Rangers a 12-6 lead with 4:18 to play in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans didn't wait long to respond, however, as Fonger pushed a rushing attempt outside and then scampered down the sideline for a 54-yard TD with 3:33 remaining. Kell Piggott nailed the extra point to give the Spartans a 13-12 advantage.

But La Crosse Logan then marched down the field and knocked on the Spartans' goal-line door before Fonger stripped the Rangers' ball carrier and secured it in his arms for a crucial turnover. The Spartans then ran out the clock and improved to 3-1 overall. The Rangers fell to 2-4.

Fonger finished the game with 10 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown, while QB Kimmes had 11 touches for 44 yards and a score to go with 6-for-13 passing for 62 yards.

For the Rangers, Wieland had 21 rushes for 67 yards and a TD, while Waite went 12-for-23 for 186 yards, a TD pass and an interception to Superior's Jordan Goldfine. Bye was the major beneficiary of Waite's passes, hauling in four receptions for 125 yards and a score.

Superior's Jason Samarziya led the team with 8.5 tackles, including one for a loss. Jonah Gruen paced La Crosse Logan's defense with five tackles.

The Rangers led the Spartans in time of possession (32:02 to 15:58) and total offense (317 to 249), but Superior edged La Crosse Logan in the turnover battle, 3-2.
