Outlook: The Hawks dominated Duluth Denfeld 36-0 in Friday’s season opener, scoring touchdowns on every possession except a kneeldown at the end of the first half. Senior fullback Robbie Thorsten rushed for 109 yards on 13 carries while Luke Lind and Gavin Blomdahl combined for 117 yards on the ground. Quarterback Michael Lau debuted by completing 6 of 7 passes for 121 yards. … The Thunderhawks stormed to a 27-0 halftime lead en route to a 41-14 victory over Duluth East. Grand Rapids QB Trent Johnson passed for 131 yards and four touchdowns while leading the team with 93 yards on 10 rushes, including a touchdown. The Thunderhawks finished with 238 yards rushing. Grand Rapids won last year’s meeting, 21-14.
NORTHWESTERN (3-0) AT CUMBERLAND (3-0)
What: Heart O’ North Conference game
When: 7 p.m.
Outlook: The Tigers held St. Croix Falls to 107 total yards in a 10-6 home victory Friday. Northwestern’s defense allowed only 23 yards rushing on 28 carries. On the offensive side, Greg Ohman ran for 102 yards on eight carries and scored the Tigers’ only touchdown. Colin Trautt added 63 yards on 18 attempts. Northwestern ran for 260 yards but didn’t complete a pass. Ohman also had 10 tackles on defense. Games against Cumberland and Spooner the next two weeks likely will decide the Heart O’ North title. … Cumberland downed host Bloomer 42-12 to remain undefeated. QB Maddux Allen completed 25 of 30 passes for 334 yards and three touchdowns. Jack Martens and DeShaun Ames each had more than 100 yards receiving, while Sam Schradle rushed for 124 yards and two scores. Cumberland is averaging nearly 50 points per game. Cumberland went 8-2 last season but lost 37-6 to Northwestern.
