Former St. Scholastica quarterback Zach Edwards has signed a professional football contract with the L’Hospitalet Pioners of the Liga Nacional de Futbol Americano (LNFA), the Spanish team announced Friday.

Edwards is the first CSS football player to sign a pro contract. He is the Saints’ all-time leader in completions (696), passing yards (9,024) and passing touchdowns (90).

“It’s a dream come true to be able to say I’m playing professional football, and I’m excited for the opportunity to keep playing and to continue to get better as I work my way up,” Edwards said in a release.

Edwards was a three-time UMAC first-team selection who led the conference in passing yards (3,105), passing touchdowns (32), completions per game (28.2) and total offense per game (329.6) last fall, ranking in the top 10 in NCAA Division III in those categories.

Edwards, of St. Paul, is a Henry Sibley High School product. He leaves the CSS program with single-game records for completions (36) and passing yards (509) and set single-season records for completions (282) and touchdowns responsible for (39).

The LNFA is the top American football league in Spain, with the Pioners having won six LNFA Bowls, second-most in league history. Edwards is expected to join the team in November, with the season starting in January.

“What has most impressed us is his mobility and the ability he has to extend the play to find the perfect hole,” Pioners coach Bart Iaccarino said in a release. “In all the interviews we have done with him, he is seen as very humble and a person who has understood the importance of his role in our team. We are looking forward to working with him.”
