The final mushers in the 2014 John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon crossed the finish line early Thursday morning.

Blake Freking of Finland was the last one to reach Billy's Bar just north of Duluth, finishing the 374-mile race along the North Shore at 5:10 a.m. Freking had five dogs left in harness, race officials reported.

Mushers in this year's Beargrease, which started Sunday afternoon in Duluth, had to contend with temperatures in the teens and 20s below zero, with much lower wind chills. The wind caused significant blowing and drifting snow along the trail, and three of the 10 mushers who started the full-distance race dropped out along the way.

The race was won by Nathan Schroeder of Chisholm, who crossed the finish line at 1:19 p.m. Wednesday with a team of 10 dogs. It was his second-straight Beargrease win and third overall; Schroeder plans to compete in Alaska's famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in March.

Keith Aili of Ray finished second, three hours after Schroeder. Peter McClelland of Ely took third place.
