Outlook: The second playoff game at NBC Spartan Sports Complex figures to be a dandy for fans of pass-heavy offensive attacks. Both Nick Mehlum of Superior and James Morgan of Ashwaubenon are finalists for the Dave Krieg Award, given annually to Wisconsin’s best senior quarterback. Mehlum has thrown for 2,712 yards and a state-best 32 touchdowns on 151-of-239 passing (63.2 percent). The senior, who is receiving recruiting interest from Division I and II schools, has a QB rating of 134.6. Ross Kennelly (108 carries, 707 yards, 10 TDs) leads the rushing attack, while Jake Libal (53 receptions, 1,023 yards, 12 TDs) and Beau Girard (34-639, nine) are the chief receiving threats. Kennelly also leads the defense with 112 tackles and six sacks. The second-seeded Spartans blanked Holmen 21-0 last week for their first playoff victory since 1991. This game initially was scheduled for Friday, but travel concerns pushed it back. … Morgan has thrown for 2,993 yards and 31 TDs on 217-of-370 passing (58.6 percent). The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Morgan, who has committed to Division I Bowling Green, boasts a QB rating of 101.3. Three players - Sam Wisneski (56 catches, 929 yards), Kyle Monroe (55-856) and Jaret Curtis (50-461) - have more than 50 receptions. The Jaguars, seeded third, beat De Pere 35-28 in overtime last week after rallying out of a 14-0 deficit. Morgan threw five TDs in that one, but also was intercepted three times. Ashwaubenon, located just outside of Green Bay, suffered its lone defeat Oct. 3 against Bay Port. This afternoon’s winner will play either Menasha or Hortonville next week.
