Twins' playoff ceremonies have local flavor
Former Minnesota Duluth football player and heavyweight boxing contender Scott LeDoux will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before tonight's Minnesota Twins playoff opener against the New York Yankees at Target Field. LeDoux, a native of Crosby, Minn., was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, in August 2008. The 2009 UMD Athletic Hall of Fame inductee will throw to former Twin Kent Hrbek, whose father died from ALS in 1982.
Meanwhile, Dawn Jones of Twig will be one of 60 people holding up a gigantic American flag before the national anthem. A season ticket holder who has attended 21 games this season, Jones works in the marketing department at Miller Hill Mall.
Seahawks land Lynch
SEATTLE -- The Buffalo Bills gave up on Marshawn Lynch as their featured ball carrier on Tuesday, trading him to the Seattle Seahawks for a pair of undisclosed draft picks. Seattle released running back Julius Jones, its leading rusher the past two seasons, to clear a roster spot for Lynch. Jones restructured his contract and took a hefty pay cut just before the start of the season, then carried the ball just 12 times for

Bowyer deduction upheld
CONCORD, N.C. -- Richard Childress Racing lost its last bid Tuesday to overturn Clint Bowyer's championship-ending penalty. NASCAR chief appellate officer John Middlebrook ruled Bowyer will not get back the
150 points he was docked after his winning car at New Hampshire on Sept. 19 failed inspection.
But Middlebrook did reduce two portions of NASCAR's penalties against RCR. Crew chief Shane Wilson's $150,000 fine was reduced to $100,000, and the six race suspensions for Wilson and car chief Chad Haney were cut to four. It was Middlebrook's first hearing since accepting the $1-a-year position in February. The former General Motors executive mediated during two hours of testimony between Childress and Sprint Cup Series director John Darby.
Bucks open preseason with win over Bulls
MILWAUKEE -- Earl Boykins scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter to help the Milwaukee Bucks to a 92-83 NBA victory over the Chicago Bulls in their preseason opener Tuesday night. Joakim Noah of the Bulls had 10 points, six rebounds, a steal and an assist one day after agreeing to a five-year contract extension worth $60 million.
Drew Gooden and Keyon Dooling both had 12 points and Luc Mbah a Moute added 11 for Milwaukee.
