Friday's prep football game between Superior and Duluth East began with a tribute to a fallen East teammate.

Junior Clayton Deraas, a football and baseball player, accidentally drowned in Island Lake a month ago and his teammates honored him symbolically on the first play by throwing a long pass downfield.

"The tribute was special to our players and special to his mother (Linda)," East coach Joe Hietala said. "Clayton is definitely missed. The Superior football community and Bob DeMeyer are class acts. I approached Bob about this earlier in the week and he had no problem with it whatsoever. I thank him for his graciousness."

Linda Deraas also walked out on the field with East's captains before the game.
