MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Team doctors were avoiding Adam Gase - and that’s never a good sign.
Gase, the Miami Dolphins’ first-year coach, was trying to get news on quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who suffered a knee injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s 26-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
The Dolphins won’t make an official announcement as to the severity of Tannehill’s injury until today. But early indications are that Tannehill will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Tannehill, who is slated to undergo a magnetic resonance imaging exam today, hasn’t missed a start since the Dolphins drafted him out of Texas A&M in 2012, but that is apparently about to change.
“With all the shots that Ryan has taken this season,” Gase said, “for him to not see (the hit) coming and not to be able to defend himself is a tough way to get knocked out of a game.”
Gase acknowledged that the early view on the Tannehill injury “does not look good.”
The hit on Tannehill was applied by former Miami Hurricanes star Calais Campbell, a 6-foot-8, 300-pounder who was playing in his college stadium for the first time as a pro.
Without Tannehill, the Dolphins (8-5) could be in serious trouble as they battle for the second and final AFC wild-card berth. As of now, the Dolphins are tied with the Denver Broncos for that spot.
Denver closes with three exceptionally tough games: home against the New England Patriots, at the Kansas City Chiefs and home against the Raiders. All three opponents have won at least 10 games this season.
The Dolphins play two road games against teams with losing records - the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills - and then return home to close the regular season against the Patriots.
Matt Moore, who hasn’t started a game since 2011, is Miami’s backup. He made a big 29-yard completion to Kenny Stills in the final minute of Sunday’s win over Arizona to lead the Dolphins to victory.
Now, apparently, it will be Moore’s team to try to get to the playoffs.
“Just looking at Ryan, I knew he was upset,” Moore said of Tannehill as he came off the field. “I wish him the best. Hopefully, it’s not (a) terrible (injury).”
Moore finished Sunday’s game 3-for-5 for 47 yards. He nearly had a touchdown on the pass to Stills, who was tackled at the 1-yard line by Kevin Minter and Justin Bethel.
On the game’s final play from scrimmage, Moore did not get a clean center exchange, was stepped on, and it was nearly a disaster for Miami.
The Dolphins were just trying to kill the clock so Andrew Franks could kick on the final play, giving Arizona no time for a comeback. That’s exactly what happened, but it was close.
Moore handed off to Damien Williams, who ran around a bit before finally going down. The timeout occurred with just one second left.
“He was trying to get down,” Moore said of Williams. “Thankfully, he did.”
