If you want a nice fall weekend backpacking loop, try the Angleworm Trail near Ely. It’s a 12-mile loop, most of it within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Through Sept. 30, you’ll need to pick up a permit for overnight travel in the BWCAW. After Oct. 1, you can write yourself a permit at the trailhead.
